Hot Tub Cover Getting Heavy? Here's Why You Shouldn't Ignore It

Your hot tub cover probably wasn't always this difficult to lift.

Over time, some spa owners notice their cover becoming increasingly heavy. What was once easy for one person to open suddenly feels like you're lifting a mattress soaked in water.

That's often a sign your cover has become waterlogged.

And with winter approaching, it's worth paying attention to.

Why Do Hot Tub Covers Get Heavy?

Most traditional hot tub covers contain insulating foam cores protected from moisture by a vapour barrier and outer covering.

Over time, that protective barrier can deteriorate or become damaged.

Once moisture begins reaching the foam, the core can absorb it.

The more moisture it absorbs, the heavier the cover becomes.

A Heavy Cover Isn't Just Annoying

The extra weight is inconvenient, but that's not necessarily the biggest concern.

Your hot tub cover has an important job:

Keeping heat inside the spa.

When the insulating material becomes saturated, its ability to perform that job can be reduced.

That matters particularly as outdoor temperatures drop and your hot tub needs to work harder to maintain warm water.

Signs Your Cover May Be Waterlogged

Watch for:

  • Cover becoming noticeably heavier
  • Sagging
  • Cracked or damaged outer material
  • Torn seams
  • Water collecting on top
  • Deteriorated underside
  • Persistent odours
  • Difficulty opening or closing it

One issue doesn't automatically mean the entire cover needs replacing, but multiple signs deserve attention.

What About Snow?

A compromised cover becomes an even bigger concern heading into winter.

Snow itself adds weight.

If the cover is already saturated, sagging or structurally compromised, allowing heavy snow to accumulate can put even more stress on it.

Regularly and carefully clear snow rather than letting significant accumulation build up.

Can You Dry Out a Waterlogged Cover?

Once the foam core has absorbed substantial moisture, restoring it to its original condition isn't always realistic.

A damaged outer covering can sometimes be addressed depending on the situation, but simply leaving a heavily saturated cover out to dry doesn't necessarily return its original insulating properties.

If the cover has become extremely heavy, damaged or ineffective, replacement may be the better long-term option.

A Good Cover Helps Protect Your Spa

It's easy to think of the cover as an accessory.

It isn't.

Your cover is an important part of protecting the water, maintaining temperature and keeping debris out of the spa.

That's why inspecting it should be part of your regular hot tub maintenance routine—especially before a Canadian winter.
